A Guide To The Latest Headphones In The Market
By Shaun Parker
If you are an all-night game player or an iPod maniac then this article is for you. Headphones are an essential piece of kit for many of us today as they allow us to privacy and sound quality. We look at three very different types of headphones offering reviews on their features and benefits.
The first up is an adaptable set from Sennheiser, the CX 400 Headphones. They are compatible with mobile phones and iPods offering good sound quality however they cost about 40GBP online with an RRP of 55GBP. So the question is, is it worth the upgrade? The answer depends on what you plan to use it for, the sound quality is good and enhanced by a selection of three moulder rubber ear fittings. If you plan to use it for hands free phone purposes it is suitable as the standard cable is short so that you do not have massive amounts of cable flapping around, however this proves an issue when using your iPod and you have to use the whopper 1m extension cable.
For those of you who take your gaming seriously and are willing to spend 150GBP on headphones then the next product is for you. The Sennheiser PC350 Headphones are fantastic for sound and voice quality, however when wearing them sometimes it does feel like you head is in a vice. If you are not too concerned about them wearing away your scalp then they have an adjustable microphone and are foldable for storage to boot. They have a 3m extension cable so you can walk around your command centre, or bedroom to avoid deep vein thrombosis however they are very expensive. They can be found online for about 85GBP if you look in the right places.
A cheaper alternative to the Sennheiser is the Plantronics Audio 770 Headphones. These are affordable and extremely comfortable to wear with massive speakers. The major down side is the quality of the audio when faced with the Sennheiser model, but they only cost 50GBP RRP and you can pick a pair up online for around 40GBP. If no one is ever going to see you wear them then they are ideal because they are like two millennium domes on your ears and kind of make you look like Princes Lea from Star Wars however if that does it for you, then the headphones are a cost effective alternative to the Sennheiser.
The headphones market like many others is dependent on your requirements and budget as generally you get what you pay for. It is important to remember that exposure to poor sound quality for long periods of time can potentially be damaging to your ear so sometimes upgrades are worthwhile.
