SEO and the Importance of Building Links to Deep Pages
By Tom Greaves
We all know that SEO is one of the most powerful ways to market a website and we all know that a huge amount of our SEO time is used creating links back to our sites in order to rank higher primarily on Google. Link building effectively is a skill learned through experience, in fact most of the time it is through trial and error, however there is one fundamental aspect we all should be aware of and that is building links to deep pages as well as our home pages.
Building links to deep pages helps to build a domains authority and will assist you in ranking for your targeted keywords. If a domain had all it's links pointing at 1 page, Google would consider the other pages to be of no value, if this is the case they will not get indexed and any links on them to other areas of our site will count for nothing.
So now we know how important these deep links are, we also need to know how to acquire them, as building links to deep pages can prove quite difficult for some websites. The problem is that Google require natural links and not many webmasters are going to link back to web pages that are commercial in their context. Therefore we should be looking to create an area on our site that can and will attract links. A blog is a great way to do this by publishing relevant quality content designed to help the reader instead of sell to them.
Once we have somewhere to put this content we need to ensure the content is structured well, easy to read and not overly long. Huge articles with few breaks tend to turn readers off and this will also prevent them linking to the content. Attempt to write an exclusive story or if you are not in the position to do so try to be contentious about some other news that is current, however make sure you back up any arguments you make.
Social media is a huge part of SEO now and having social media links below your articles are a must to encourage readers to share your content. Surfers tend to be lazy so make it obvious you want them to spread your content around the web. Blog carnivals are another great way to create links to deep pages, anchored with your preferred text. Submit articles once a week and you should see a steady flow of links coming back to deep pages.
