Generate More Ideas Than You Ever Thought Possible By Brainstorming
By Christine Gierer
The end goal of brainstorming is to gather as many ideas as possible. Whether you are brainstorming headline titles for articles, part favor ideas, or business strategies in a Fortune 500 company, brainstorming can help you generate more and better quality ideas that you would have found otherwise. What I like best about brainstorming is that as you go through the brainstorming process, even if you don't have an idea in your head you will get more and more ideas as you go along.
If you can go through the brainstorming process in a group that is even better, because you will jump start new ideas in each other. If you have a friend who is working on similar goals or is interested in a similar topic to your brainstorming topic, you might want to get them on the phone and you can just keep throwing stuff at each other, and that will generate even more ideas.
Best Practices for Brainstorming
Move Your Body
Hand written is the best way I've found for brainstorming, because the motion of getting your body involved in the brain storming process helps to generate more ideas. The more you get your whole body involved, the more you, more ideas you will generate too, so if you want to get up and move around that sometimes helps.
If you have a voice recorder and dictate ideas into it, that will work too. Afterwards, you can transcribe it. While you transcribe your dictated ideas, you'll find yourself getting even more ideas.
Don't censor yourself.
This is really, really important, because censoring yourself will mean you will be cutting off possibilities. The simple point of your brainstorm is to generate possibilities. There are no stupid ideas. And ideas that sound ridiculous may lead to ideas that are pure gold. Like stepping stones, one stone will lead to another.
Set a Time Limit
Set a short time limit like five minutes. Any longer, and you start to censor yourself without realizing it.
Now that you know the basics, you can start brainstorming. Just get a piece of paper and start writing down anything you can think of.
Here are some little extra prompts that will help you, if brainstorming is new to you.
The Alphabet Method: Go through the alphabet and try to generate one idea for every letter of the alphabet. I originally wrote this article as a set of guidelines for my jewelry business students, so I'll use the example I explained to them:
To brainstorm jewelry niche ideas try to go through all the letters of the alphabet. Start with A. A is for architecture. B is for bridesmaids. From there, just go through the rest of the letters and like magic, you 26 ideas right there.
Now that you've learned how to brainstorm, try to use it to generate ideas for anything you might need. Go ahead brainstorm those content article ideas, those party favors, and those business strategies. Good luck and happy brainstorming!
