Visiting Rome In The Summer

By Leigh Williams

Affectionately known as the Eternal City, Rome is a mecca for tourists, and this comes as no surprise, as it has so much to offer; from an abundance of Roman ruins and artefacts to some of the most important religious sites in the world; from great eateries and world-renowned cuisine to excellent shopping and famous boutique shops. And let's not forget the general buzz of the city; the local Romans enjoying an espresso in their regular bar while gesticulating and discussing the latest current affairs, scandals or football results; organized chaos of scooters and cars competing with each other through the cobbled streets, the familiar shout of ciao bello or ciao bella, as friends meet up with one another, the pleasant aroma of freshly baked pizza, the busy cafe terraces where the clientele like to people watch through their designer sunglasses, and the list could go on. But what is also great is that with so many green areas, little picturesque piazzas and small winding lanes in the historic centre, it is very easy to escape all this hustle and bustle and enjoy a bit of peace and quiet.

The main summer months, namely July and August are usually rain free with just 1 or 2 wet days in each of these months, i.e. more than 0.25mm of rain. So you can expect good weather and an average maximum temperature of 30 degrees Celsius/86 degrees Fahrenheit, ideal for getting a bit of sun while en route to those famous attractions. However, be warned it can get humid during these months, especially during the evening and at night. Visiting Rome during the summer months can be great, as the city is not up to full capacity people-wise. Especially when you consider that most Romans will be flocking to the seaside for their own holidays. In fact, many local and national companies close down in August and their employees take the whole month as annual leave and spend their summer holidays in the countryside or on the seaside. Also, and even more important as a visitor to Rome, these months and especially August are the low season in the city, meaning fewer tourists than most other times of the year.

With fewer tourists in the city, hotels and accommodation business are in stiff competition with each other to ensure that they get up to full capacity. Therefore, you can find some really good bargains on your hotel room. In fact, if you are thinking of visiting Rome during late July or August, you should perhaps consider upgrading from the usual 3 star property to a more comfortable 4 star hotel, as it really would be worth it. Like any major city, Rome offers a vast selection of accommodation types and here are a few examples of 4 star hotels in Rome to give you an idea of what you can find:

4 star Hotel Marcella Royal Rome is situated on a quiet side-street with very little traffic pollution, which is quite a rarity in the centre of the city. Friendly, motivated staff and comfortable, cosy guest rooms are what define this hotel. And also not to be missed is the hotel's stunning roof terrace with bar which has some really superb views of the Eternal City.

4 star Hotel Alpi Rome lies just a short distance from Termini Station, the city's main metro and train station, so you will have perfect access to any part of Rome. A family-run establishment, the hotel is housed in a magnificent Art Nouveau building. Accommodation is available in the form of 48 guest rooms, each carefully decorated and thoughtfully furnished.

4 star Albergo del Sole al Pantheon Rome is located in the heart of the historic centre. It is actually situated opposite one of the city's most impressive ancient buildings, the Pantheon. The site of the hotel has been accommodating travellers since 1467 and has been delightfully renovated and refurbished throughout the years to provide the perfect setting for an enjoyable Roman stay.
