The New Jewelry Metal
By Terry Mickelson
Titanium has been around since the end of the 18th century. The name came from the Titans of Greek mythology, they were known for their extreme and superior strength. Titanium is very light and extremely durable, making it an ideal candidate for jewelry, such as rings. Because it is so light, wearing titanium is almost like wearing nothing. It has the strength of steel but the weight of aluminum.
One of the benefits of titanium rings is that less people seem to have an allergic reaction to it than with gold alloys. This could be because it is not as main stream as gold is. If you have not been able to wear gold jewelry due to sensitive skin, titanium may be a suitable alternative for you. It does not react to salt water, sunlight, or any body chemistry making it hypoallergenic. Also, since titanium is extremely lightweight it is great for people who don't usually wear jewelry because of its weight or bulkiness. Its light weight translates into comfort. You cannot imagine how light it is until you have touched it for yourself.
Another benefit of titanium rings is durability; it is virtually indestructible, which explains why space shuttles are mostly made of this metal. Titanium is very resistant and has the maximum strength to weight ratio of any known element, this is why many jewelers have a lifetime warranty on titanium rings. Over the years gold starts to wear down from normal use, but titanium will hold strong with very little wear.
Selection is another benefit. Titanium rings provides the same characteristics of platinum such as, stylish rich grey tones, but at a much better price. There are a wide variety of styles to choose from because jewelry designers are designing cutting edges styles. It is the leading fashion in the designer jewelry community and no other metal has experienced such an increase in popularity as titanium has. These rings are now set with stones; die cut, paired with gold or white gold, so finding the perfect design is no longer an issue. Reasonably priced, fashionable jewelry is not always easy to come by, so this is a great alternative for someone on a budget.
Titanium rings are very versatile and can be combined or mixed with traditional metals such silver, platinum and gold thus giving you endless opportunities for beautiful designs. Because of its affordability and ease, customization makes it perfect for designing your own ring, especially wedding bands. Whether titanium rings are right for you depends on what your needs and wants are. If you are looking for a ring that is light in weight, sleek, attractive, does not tarnish and fairly inexpensive, then titanium may be right for you.
